So just today I saw a massive use of the #googlenest hashtag on Twitter – and I almost fell for it. Luckily there is distinct evidence to see, that this is most likely not from Google. Here is my analysis:
What is it about?
Google Nest is apparently the attempt to get your most personal data – be it your feelings, a livestream of your property or your afterlife. As an incentive to use all of Google’s products, they are also offering an insurance, which will adjust the insured sum according to amount of services you use. It will be payed out whenever data misuse happens. (Side note: If that is still benificial to you after you got arrested for some weird claims by some weird government agency to shut you up is a question to be answered)

Satire or real?
Decide for yourself. Although it seems far fetched, we have seen Google to invade their user’s privacy multiple times. It also seemed far fetched, that some Agency mirrors all internet traffic and that happened as well.
My first intention was to check out the WHOIS-entry of that domain name, and it turned out, it is registered to someone at google:
Domain Name:GOOGLE-NEST.ORG Domain ID: D172274395-LROR Creation Date: 2014-04-23T13:39:30Z Updated Date: 2014-04-30T14:44:26Z Registry Expiry Date: 2015-04-23T13:39:30Z Sponsoring Registrar:eNom, Inc. But something is just not right here. Exactly: Google employees don’t use gmail addresses, they use google.com. But wait, there is more!
On http://google-nest.org you can see a „Log In“ button at the top-right corner of the site, just like at every other google website. However, there is no integration about your current log-in status, also the google-nest site is not reachable via HTTPS.
In fact, the certificate offered for SSL is *.web-hosting.com, trying to access it via SSL will show you a completely different page (of a shared hosting service)
Case closed. Google Nest is a fake.
